This article from Nature Jobs captures the apparent imbalance of power in the hiring process of most graduate students seeking postdoctoral positions, and provides tools to negotiate their way into better situations.

From the article: "Most aspiring postdocs have minimal bargaining leverage, so they choose to accept the first position offered to them, with its concomitant perks — should there be any. But candidates need to realize that they do have some wiggle room: salary, annual leave and moving expenses, among other things, can be negotiated. And postdocs should know that in terms of benefits, not all positions are created equal."
