The Office of Academic Training and Outreach Programs (ATOP) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2020 Award for Excellence in Mentoring Research Trainees. The nomination deadline been extended to Friday, April 24.

Purpose
The Award for Excellence in Mentoring Research Trainees recognizes faculty who effectively guide and monitor advanced training and professional development of postdoctoral fellows, physician fellows, and CHOP-based graduate students, in an ongoing partnership sustained by mutual respect. The award is designed to honor faculty members who have provided exceptional support as research mentors.

Please Note: The primary nominator must be a Postdoctoral Fellow, Physician Fellow, or CHOP-based Graduate Student.

Eligibility
Nominees must be CHOP-based faculty in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania or CHOP-based Drexel research faculty.

Past trainee nominators are encouraged to update and resubmit previous nominations.

How to Nominate a Mentor
The following information must be submitted to the Office of Academic Training and Outreach Programs by completing the nomination form.

  1. The primary nominator must complete the nomination form (you will need to log-in via a Google Account to complete). Nominators must be a current postdoctoral fellow, physician fellow, or CHOP-based graduate student being trained by the nominee.
  2. Upload as one PDF, within the nomination form, the following documents:
    1. List of nominee’s past trainees and current positions - Sample Trainee Table
    2. Mentor’s brief biosketch
    3. Maximum of 3 additional letters of support. Letters can be provided by other mentees, former trainees, faculty, etc., who can speak to the quality of mentorship. Competitive letters of support will address all 6 of the criteria listed below (individual paragraphs addressing each criterion specifically are recommended).

Please Note: You must submit the nomination form and PDF document at one time. Forms cannot be saved as a draft.

Criteria
The nominee should:
1. Serve as advisor, teacher, and advocate
2. Create a supportive environment for research
3. Provide trainees with the resources necessary to take full advantage of institutional, academic, and professional opportunities (publications, conferences, networking, etc.)
4. Provide future career guidance for various career paths (academia, industry, government, teaching, non-research, etc.)
5. Maintain accessibility by providing consistently open lines of communication
6. Provide mentorship and guidance in responsible conduct of research (RCR)

Selection Process
Nomination packets will be reviewed by the Research Trainee Advisory Committee. The committee will take the nominees’ career/experience level into consideration and may elect to choose more than one winner.

Award Presentation
The winner will be invited to present at a session of the Faculty Luncheon series during the 2020-2021 academic year, featured in Cornerstone, and be recognized with an award plaque.
