The Girls Advancing in STEM (GAINS) Initiative connects high school girls with an interest in STEM with peers and role models. Through annual conferences, student-led clubs, and online virtual communities, girls have the opportunity to build their network while learning about STEM careers.

This fall, the GAINS Initiative has partnered with UPenn to host their 5th Annual GAINS Conference on November 13-15, 2019. The conference will bring together over 120 high school girls from the Philadelphia area and around the US to explore STEM careers. Volunteers are needed to give STEM tours, present technical talks, and participate in a career mixer. Interested? Read on!

 STEM Tours

Thursday, November 14

Session I - 1:30pm

Session II - 3:30pm

Host a 45-60 min walking tour of your research space or building with a small (10-12) group of students. Time commitment of 1 - 2 hours.

The goal of STEM Tours is to expose students to your environment while engaging them in conversation about your work. You (or a member of your team) can host the tour once or in tandem. Students register for sessions in advance so you can specify the number of students you are able to accommodate in each session. Students are accompanied by a teacher that will take the group to your location.

*CHOP requires Tour Plan Approval forms to be completed, in accordance with the Minors in Research Laboratories Policy. For questions about tour approval, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Technical Talks

Friday, November 15

Session I - 9:00am

Session II - 9:45am

Present a 30 min technical talk or join a panel discussion. Time commitment of 45 min - 1.5 h.

A technical talk is a 30 min presentation about your work geared towards motivated high school girls. These are small group sessions that will allow for interactions between the presenter and students. Volunteers can offer their talk once or twice.

Career Mixer

10:30 am on Friday, November 15

Participate in our Career Mixer. Time commitment of 1 h.

The Career Mixer will feature small group discussions about your STEM career and your path. Every 6-8 minutes, students will move to a new table to meet a new role model. We provide questions and prompts to get the discussions started. Volunteers are welcome to stay for lunch to catch up with students and follow up on discussions.
